Ural Federal University (UrFU) is one of the top ranked scientific centres in Russia carrying out research in natural,
technical, social sciences, humanities and economics.
Ural University was established in 1920. The university comprised of following two universities connected tightly
with each other.
Ÿ Ural State University (USU) - for education in natural sciences, social sciences and humanities and
Ÿ Ural Polytechnic Institute (UPI), focused on training of engineers in areas such as metallurgy, machine-
building, civil engineering and cutting-edge educational directions like nuclear energetic and medicine, organic
chemistry and synthesis, telecommunications
In 2008, with massive reform of Russian university system, the universities achieved special federal status. USU
and UPI were merged into the united Ural Federal University (UrFU) and the University now carries the name of
Boris Yeltsin, one of its most famous Graduates of 1955, the first President of Russia.
The University includes 18 Institutes offering over 120 Bachelor's Degree course and over 80 Master's Degree
course. UrFU research facilities include dozens of research centres, innovation infrastructure, the Research
Library boasting a collection of over three million books, several museums and specialized collections. The total
number of students at UrFU exceeds 50,000.
The University is engaged in numerous international projects funded by governmental institutions and non-
governmental organizations from Russia, European Union, and the US. UrFU is a member of the SCO (Schanghai
Organization of Collaboration) Network University, the CIS (Community of Independent States) Network University
and the Network University of the Arctic.
In 90 years of its history, Ural University has more than 270 thousands of graduates, many of whom became
successful in research, culture or politics. The first foreign students came to study at UrFU in the 1940s. There are
more than a thousand foreign students studying at UrFU today. More than 2,500 specialists working in various
countries of Europe, Asia, andAfrica have been trained at the University.
